About the Artist:

Described as “ferociously talented” (The Oregonian), Grammy-Award winning flutist Molly Alicia Barth is an active solo, chamber, and orchestral musician, specializing in the music of today. In demand as a soloist, Molly has recently performed in Australia, Korea, and Mexico and has played solo recitals and led clinics at esteemed institutions including the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Oberlin Conservatory, Cincinnati Conservatory, and Northwestern University Bienen School of Music. As co-founder of the Beta Collide New Music Project, Molly has collaborated with individuals from a broad spectrum of disciplines such as dance, art, sound sculpture and theoretical physics.  With Beta Collide, she has recorded two CDs and one DVD with Innova Records.  As a founding member of the new music sextet eighth blackbird, Molly toured extensively, recorded four CDs with Cedille Records, and was granted the 2000 Naumburg Chamber Music Award and first prize at the 1998 Concert Artists Guild International Competition. Molly is the Assistant Professor of Flute at the University of Oregon and has taught at Willamette University and held residencies at the University of Chicago and at the University of Richmond. She plays a Burkart flute and piccolo, and a 1953 Haynes alto flute.

Join the Chicago Flute Club at our festival and experience a great masterclass for the middle school age student with The Ohio State University flute professor, Katherine Borst Jones.  This masterclass will be open for flutists in grades 3-9.  Please see the masterclass application for complete audition guidelines.

About the Artist:

Katherine Borst Jones, professor of flute, has been at The Ohio State University since 1985 and has served as chair of woodwinds, brass and percussion since 1999 and of orchestral instruments since 2009.  She was awarded the Distinguished Teacher award in 1995 and 2012, and the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2008.  She is a founding member and co-principal flutist of the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, a founding member of the flute/viola/harp trio COSMOS, a member of the Jones/Norton Duo with harpist Jeanne Norton, and a member of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra.  She is principal flute of the New Sousa Band, which performed at the 2009 WASBE and Mid-West Band and Orchestra clinics and has toured Japan, China and the US.

In frequent demand as a clinician, Ms. Jones has presented numerous clinics and master classes at events in Ohio, the nation and throughout the world. She is a visiting professor at the Shenyang Conservatory of Music in Shenyang, China where she has performed and given master classes at two international flute festivals. She performed at the 2012 British Flute Society International Convention in Manchester, England.

Created in 1976 by Ms. Jones, the annual Flute Workshop for High School Students at Ohio State draws students nationally.  One of the first to incorporate flute choir into a university flute studio curriculum, Ms. Jones conducts the OSU Flute Troupe, an ensemble that has performed at four national (NFA) and four state (OMEA) conventions. The group has premiered many works especially written for them by composers Daniel Bukvich, Roger Cichy, Thomas Duffy, Christopher Norman, Matthew Saunders, Christopher Weait and Thomas Wells.

Ms. Jones has served in many roles for the National Flute Association:  as president (twice), vice-president, and 1992 convention program chair; she is the current chair of development and serves on the advisory committee.  She has performed at numerous conventions and was a member of the NFA delegation to the Soviet Union in 1989.  She was the first conductor of the Collegiate Flute Choir and has also conducted the National High School Flute Choir, among others. She received the National Service Award in 2011. 

Ms. Jones studied with Keith Brion, Robert Willoughby, Kyril Magg, Donald McGinnis, and Julius Baker. She has performed with symphonies, chamber groups and festivals around the world. She has recorded for CRI, d'Note and Summit, including a flute and harp CD, Paradise.  She has commissioned solo and chamber works of composers Libby Larsen, Michael Ruszczynski, Mark DeVoto, Stephen Paulus, Dale Warland and Rudolfo Bubalo, among others.
