Annual Adult Competition

The Chicago Flute Club began holding an adult competition, open to flutists age 18 and older (excluding high school students) in 2003. The Adult Competition was originally conceived as a 3-year cycle of different competitions, rotating between an Orchestral Excerpt Competition, a Chamber Music Competition, and a Solo Competition. In 2005, before the cycle began again, it was decided to add a fourth competition to the cycle, a Piccolo Competition. The prizes started out modestly in the first couple of years of the competition (the first year's first place prize was a mere $100!), but as the board's desire to transform this competition into an effort worthy of drawing contestants nation-wide grew, so did the prizes. The awards for the Annual Adult Competition evolved into $1000 for first place, and $500 for second place. The third place award was eliminated, due to the substantial first and second prizes. (However, it was felt that all finalists were deserving of mention in the past competition winners' list that follows.) Thus the competition grew into its current 4-year rotating cycle of the Chicago Flute Club's Annual Adult Competitions, drawing competitors from around the nation each year. This competition is now one of the highlights of the Chicago Flute Club's annual Flute Fair.
