2018 STUDENT COMPETITIONs

Learn beautiful music and share your talents at the Chicago Flute Club Student Competition.

The Chicago Flute Club is excited to announce the 2018 Student Competition.  The competition will be held on Sunday, November 4, 2018 at Harper College, 1200 West Algonquin Road, Building P, Palatine, IL 60067.  Online registration opens on August 1st. Application details, contest rules, and other information will be mailed to all members and is posted on our website.  **Please note that your membership must already be active to register online. You will need to complete one transaction for membership, and a second transaction for competition registration. The system will not recognize you as a member if you have not completed payment through PayPal.**


Below are the required selections for each division of the competition:

ELEMENTARY DIVISION REPERTOIRE – Must be in Grades 6 and under

Valse Graccieuse (no repeats) by Wilhelm Popp, and Giga (no repeats) by George Frideric Handel, from Rubank Concert and Contest Collection for C Flute with Piano Accompaniment, edited by H. Voxman

JUNIOR DIVISION REPERTOIRE – Must be in Grades 9 and under

Morceaux de concours by Gabriel Faure, CD Sheet Music or available on IMSLP

Rejoice, Movt. No. 5,  from Suite in A minor by G. P. Telemann, G. Schirmer or available on IMSLP

SENIOR DIVISION REPERTOIREMust be in Grades 12 and under

Allegro Molto from Three Preludes Op. 18 for unaccompanied flute, by Robert Muczynski, G. Schirmer

Andante Pastoral and Scherzettino by Paul Taffanel, G. Schirmer Flute Music by French Composers, edited by. L. Moyse


Contestants must provide their own accompanist. A list of recommended accompanists may be found here, or you may use an accompanist of your choice.


The winners of each division will be announced at the competition, on our website, and on Facebook after all participants have performed. Each contestant will have the rewarding experience of competing at a high level with other top student flutists in the Chicago area and playing for judges who are well known professional flutists and university flute professors.  All competitors receive the judges’ comment sheets. The winners in each division receive monetary prizes and certificates suitable for framing. First prize winners in each division will also receive the honor of performing at a Chicago Flute Club member’s showcase recital during our 2018-2019 season.


Elementary Division Awards: 1st Prize - $100, 2nd Prize - $75, 3rd Prize - $50

Junior Division Awards: 1st Prize - $150, 2nd Prize - $100, 3rd Prize - $75

Senior Division Awards: 1st Prize - $350, 2nd Prize - $250, 3rd prize - $150
