Learn beautiful music and share your talent at the Chicago Flute Club Student Competition.

The Chicago Flute Club is excited to announce the 2019 Student Competition. The competition will be held on Sunday, November 17, 2019 at Harper College, 1200 West Algonquin Road, Building P, Palatine, IL 60067.  Online registration is open! Please visit our event page to register. Application details, contest rules, and other information can be found below.

In an effort to save trees and optimize the registration process, competition brochures will NOT be mailed this year. All contestants are encouraged to register online by October 15. Contestants who are unable to use the online registration may download and print the competition brochure here and follow the mailing instructions listed on the application form.

Below are the required selections for each division of the competition:


  1. Open to any student member who is a student of a Chicago Flute Club member.
  2. For the 2019-20 school year, Senior Division students must be in grades 12 and under, Junior Division students must be in grades 9 and under, and Elementary Division students must be in grades 6 and under.
  3. Previous first prize winners are not eligible to compete in the same division again.

Contest Rules

  1. Application must be postmarked by October 15, 2019. Applicants are encouraged to register ONLINE. You can also download, print and mail the APPLICATION FORM. There will be a $15 late fee for entries, if they are accepted.
  2. Both student and teacher must be current CFC members. Membership dues ($30 for a student) must be current and may be paid online. It may also be included with a mailed application and application fee of $25. Membership dues are non-refundable. Dues include the CFC newsletter, Pipeline, and free or discounted admission to all programs for member and one guest.
  3. Each student must submit a name of a parent/guardian who can volunteer for 30 minutes on the day of the competition.
  4. Performance time requests should be made in writing with submission of the online application, but there is no guarantee a specific time can be accommodated.
  5. The competition may be limited to the first 40 applicants in each division. A confirmation email with assigned times for each performer and volunteer will be sent approximately 2 weeks before the competition. It is the responsibility of the student or parent/guardian to verify information sent to them by the CFC contest coordinator.
  6. Contestants who decide not to compete should notify Mariana Gariazzo by November 1 to allow for necessary schedule changes. The application fee will be refunded only if the cancellation is received on or before November 1.

Repertoire Rules

  1. There is no memorization requirement in any division.
  2. It is recommended to use the editions specified. If a student chooses to use a different edition or make other changes in the part (such as to articulation or dynamics), the student must supply two copies of his/her edition for the judges when competing.
  3. Contestants must provide their own accompanists. A list of recommended accompanists may be found HERE. You may also use an accompanist not on the list.

Junior and Senior winners will be announced at the competition, on our website, and on Facebook after all participants have performed, around 8:00 pm. Elementary Division winners will also be announced at the competition, on our website, and on Facebook soon after all participants have performed earlier in the day. First place winners in each division will be invited to perform on the Chicago Flute Club Spring Member Showcase Concert in the spring of our 2019-2020 Season. Judges’ comments for all students will be sent to teachers.
