Calling All Flutists - College level and professionals! There is no age limit to this competition.
Hone your talents at the 2023 Chicago Flute Club Donald Peck International Flute Competition.
The Chicago Flute Club is excited to announce the 2023 Donald Peck International Flute Competition. The competition will take place during our biennial Flute Festival: Together Again! on Sunday, October 1, 2023 at the magnificent Epiphany Center for the Arts. Online registration will be open on June1st, 2023 Artists will submit their recordings at the time of registration. Please click on the registration button at the bottom of this page to register. Application details, competition rules, required repertoire, and other information can be found below.
To be good stewards of our environment and optimize the registration process, candidates must register online and submit their unlisted YouTube short link by July 15th, 2023.
Eligibility
- This competition is open to non-members and members of the Chicago Flute Club.
- A non-refundable application fee of $45 will apply upon the registration.
- Competition registrations must be made under the full name and email address of the applicant.
- Applicants should be flutists who are college-age and up. There is no age limit.
- Previous first prize winners are not eligible to compete in the same division again.
Competition Rules
- The application for the 2023 Donald Peck International Flute Competition must be filled out online.
- A registration fee of $45 must be paid online on the Chicago Flute Club website at the time of registration.
- Those candidates who decide NOT to compete should notify Ms. Hideko Amano at adultcomp@chicagofluteclub.org to withdraw their registration/application. The registration fee will NOT be refunded.
- Video file does NOT need to be professional quality. Smartphones and similar recording devices are acceptable and encouraged. We highly recommend standing at an appropriate distance from the recording device to be able to hear you clearly.
- You may record each piece separately, but the submission must be compiled into one single video, in the sequence listed below. No editing of any kind, including the use of acoustic manipulation and audio filters.
- The videos are to be put together on a single YouTube link. It must be unlisted and named with the last and first names of the candidate followed by DPIC. For instance, Underwood_Susan_DPIC
- This single YouTube URL short link must be pasted in the form at the time of registration, thus submitting it for adjudication.
- There will be no evaluation or comments from the judging panel for all students.
- Four finalists will be selected and notified by August 1st, 2023
- Final Round of Donald Peck International Competition 2023 will take place at the Chicago Flute Club Festival on Sunday, October 1, 2023 (Time TBA)
Repertoire Rules
- No memorization required.
- It is recommended to use the edition specified below.
- Each work of the repertoire must be performed with no repeats or da Capo al Fine, even if it is indicated in the sheet music.
Repertoire
Preliminary Round:
1. Caprice No. 21 in A Major by Paganini (International Music Company, Ed. by Herman & Wummer)
2. Danza de la Mariposa by Valerie Coleman (Theodore Presser)
Final Round:
1. Required work: Movement 1, Sonata for Flute and Piano "American Portraits" by James M. Stephenson
2. Applicant's choice: One contrasting work from the Romantic repertoire. The work should be a minimum of 7 minutes to a maximum of 12 minutes in length. The performance must include the piano accompaniment if this piece requires piano accompaniment.
3. Finalists are responsible for providing and paying for their own accompanists. Please contact Hideko Amano at adultcomp@chicagofluteclub.org if you need help in finding a local accompanist.

Prizes
The winners of the 2023 Donald Peck International Competition will be announced on Sunday, October 1st, 2023 at the final of the competition. The results will be posted and announced on the Chicago Flute Club website and the Chicago Flute Club social media pages.

- August 1, 2023 - Announcement of Finalists
- October 1, 2023 - Final Round in-person Donald Peck International Competition and announcement at the CFC Festival 2023.
