Final Round Concert - CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WINNERS!

What a phenomenal night of performances!

Join us for what is certain to be an exciting concert featuring the four finalists. Previously commissioned by the Chicago Flute Club, Birds of Paradise for flute and piano by Shulamit Ran will be featured as the required piece in addition to the performer’s chosen piece.

Piccolo Masterclass with Jennifer Gunn

Hailed as “a dazzling piccolo virtuoso,” Jennifer Gunn was appointed to the position of Piccolo of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra by Maestro Daniel Barenboim in 2005. In demand as a clinician, Gunn has taught masterclasses around the world. Dive into the piccolo world and challenge yourself to see and hear the expressive possibilities of this beautiful instrument.

The Self-Sufficient Flutist with Hadar Noiberg

11:45am-1:15 pm

Hadar Noiberg has developed a method that teaches flutists how to discover and apply their own, unique, creative insights, regardless of their musical genre. Whether you are a Classical, Jazz, Latin, or World Music flutist, Noiberg will explore interactive exercises that deepen a connection to harmony and rhythm to gain freedom and confidence in all playing situations. Have your flutes ready for this interactive class.

Masterclass with Emma Gerstein

1:30-3:00 pm

Emma Gerstein, second flute of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra was appointed to the post in 2017 by Music Director Riccardo Muti. Prior to joining the CSO, Gerstein servedas the section Principal Flute of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra in NewZealand. Ms. Gerstein will share her expertise focusing on orchestral repertoire.

Explore the Deep Core: Embodying Your Music with Valarie Samulski

3:15-4:15 pm


Valarie Samulski’s workshop will integrate principles from Pilates, Yoga, and Qi Gong to help participants embody their music. A strong focus on anatomy, alignment, and breath mechanics will increase core support, clarity of pitch, and range of expression. Musicians will experience their bodies as their primary instrument, cultivating a physical conduit where music flows from the inside out. 


Please bring a yoga mat or large towel to practice. You will need enough floor space to rest on your back with arms and legs fully extended.

Vocal Function Exercises with Dr. Kathleen Wilson

4:30-5:30 pm

Dr. Wilson will share her research and strategies used with singers, as crossover techniques that could be useful for flute players. She has had demonstrated success withsingers focusing on anatomy, physiology, and acoustics, in addition to imagery and other concepts to improve vocal technique. Her work on breathing could be especially applicable for flute players. The session is highly interactive and will provide opportunities for practice/application of concepts as well as discussion.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 14TH

Solo Repertoire Masterclass with Stefán Ragnar Höskuldsson

12:00-1:30 pm

Principal flutist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Stefán Ragnar Höskuldsson, was appointed by Music Director Riccardo Muti in 2015. Mr. Höskuldsson, who is also a distinguished soloist and chamber musician, served as principal flute of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra from 2008-2016. A native of Iceland, Höskuldsson has been praised for “masterly and thrilling performances” on his solo CDs. Discover effective ways to bring the solo flute repertoire to life.

Presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Awards

Curiosity, Connection, Communication, and Celebration:

Exploring the Parallel Worlds of Space and Music with Paul Edmund-Davies and Cady Coleman

2:00-3:30 pm

Astronaut Cady Coleman and renowned flutist, Paul Edmund-Davies, will discuss and explore the unique parallels between Space and Music. Focus will be placed on how these unusual and extraordinary relationships can be brought to center stage, guiding us to a better sense of how to Communicate, Connect, and Celebrate the joy of life with one another now and in the future, both on earth and on planets far away.

NFA’s 50th Anniversary Chicago Convention: A Sneak Peek!
